OPTIMISTS
STEP UP FOR SAIGON SOUTH
Optimism has been expressed in the Saigon South
urban expansion zone projected by its investor, the Phu My
Hung Corporation.
The corporation, a joint venture between the Central Trading
& Development Group from Taiwan and the Ho Chi Minh Citys
Tan Thuan Industrial Development Corporation, aims to develop
3,300 hectares area in District 7, south of Ho Chi Minh City.
It envisions developing a new city centre that would be an
appropriate answer to the citys growth in relation to
transport and environmental issues.
The carefully planned urban development features world class
infrastructure and education and health facilities in a clean,
harmonious environment.
The master plan for the project received the Best Urban Design
Award from the America Institute of Architects in 1997.
Officials from the corporation maintained that Saigon Souths
strategic location combined with the authorities commitment
to expand the city to the south, created an attractive set
of conditions for Vietnamese and foreign investors.
A one-stop service with the Management Authority for Saigon
South Development, fully transferred land-use rights, mortgages
for housing and apartment purchases were among the incentives.
The new city centre has so far seen rapid progress, with tower
blocks including the Southern Cross apartments and the Park
Central building. It also plays host to the Taipei, Japanese
and the Korean Schools.
The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology is investing in
a higher education project and a plan for a full international
standard 200-bed hospital is to commence in March 2001 for
a targeted opening early in 2002.
Apartment complexes include My Canh, My An, completed in 1998
and 1999, and My Hung Villas. Nam Thien & Nam Long land
parcel projects, Phu Gia 99 luxury villas and the Hung Vuong
are also on the drawing board.
In term of leisure facilities, the new city centre offers
amusement facilities in Saigon Wonderland. There is also roller-skating
at the San Patin, golf at the nine-hole Saigon South Executive
Golf Course, tennis courts and a swimming pool.
